New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Indian amateur golfers trio of Vidyatri Urs, Zara Anand and Heena Kang are all set to make a splash at the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch, New Zealand for the Queen Sirikit Cup starting on Wednesday. The three women amateurs have been sent by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) as part of their annual calendar of training and competition, which is funded by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). IGU has appointed Sunita Kataria as the team manager for this event.
Interestingly, the Indian amateur team of Avani Prashant, Vidyatri and Nishna Patel had finished unprecedented runners-up at the prestigious tournament in Manila last year. Apart from this, Avni ended the wait of 43 years by winning the individual title.
Zara, who was part of Uttar Pradesh’s silver medal-winning team at the National Games at Delhi Golf Club last year, is excited to make her first appearance at the 44th edition of the event in New Zealand. During practice in Christchurch, Zara said, “I am very excited to represent the country in the Queen Sirikit Cup for the first time. The Indian team was the runner-up last year, which has given me a lot of confidence. I strongly believe that our team will put up a memorable performance in New Zealand.”
The pair will be in good stead after a sixth-place finish at the sixth leg of the Zara Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour tournament last week at India’s toughest course – DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurugram, with Vidyatri breaking into the top-5. Zara will open the game at 8:30 am local time along with Indonesia’s Talita Wahudi and Japan’s Aina Fujimoto. Vidyatri will start her round at 8:40 am local time along with Ellen Widjaja of Indonesia and Saori Iijima of Japan. Heena will start after 10 minutes along with Christina Natalia Yoko of Indonesia and Mamika Shinichi of Japan.
