Every semester, the freshman class of Rotary Middle School is organized to visit the school history museum. Rotary Middle School was established on October 11, 1918 and officially opened on November 4 of the same year. It was the first railway middle school in the country. In February 1918, 12 people including Zhan Tianyou, the first chief engineer of China Railway, jointly initiated the “Railway Colleagues Education Association”. In order to effectively solve the problem of schooling for railway workers’ disciples, the “Education Association” adopted “Rotary Public School” as its unified school name. , preparing to build schools for the children of employees along the “Four Roads”, Tianjin Rotary Middle School was one of them, and its original full name was “Tianjin Rotary Public School No. 1 Middle School”.

The word “Rotary” is originally quaint, and it is often seen in poems and poems of the Han and Wei dynasties. It originally meant “Wheel Wheel”, but in the old days it was often extended to the so-called “Daya Rotary”, used to praise a person of virtue or to express his appreciation. Chen Shengshen, one of the greatest geometers of the 20th century, is known as the “father of global differential geometry”. Chen Shengsheng was born on October 28, 1911 in Xiushui County, Jiaxing, Zhejiang. His father named him “Shengshen” because he hoped that his son could “examine myself three times a day” like Zengzi.

Chen Shengshen loved mathematics when he was a boy, and he also liked to think independently and develop independently. I find mathematics interesting and relatively easy. I often “read books on my own initiative instead of reading reference books assigned by teachers.” In 1922, Chen Shengshen moved to Tianjin with his father. In 1923, he transferred to the first grade of Rotary Middle School and officially became a member of Rotary.

Yao Ruike, the head of the Rotary Middle School History Museum, told reporters: Rotary was a middle school run by the Ministry of Transportation at that time. It had ample funds and hired excellent teachers. The principal valued mathematics very much and taught geometry himself, and he was very strict. Chen Shengshen was always able to cope with it easily. Sometimes he could do 20 or 30 questions in an hour, so he was favored by the principal. In addition, the school also has several excellent mathematics teachers such as Zheng Cichun and Peng Hansan.

In 1926, Chen published seven articles in the Rotary school magazine. In “Sixteen Proofs of a Geometry Theorem” he said: “Geometry occupies a very important position in mathematics. Not only those who are interested in studying science should pay attention to it, but also ordinary middle school students should take it. It serves as the common sense it deserves.” This article shows his deep understanding of the role of geometric training in developing intelligence, and also reveals his unique logical reasoning ability.

In 1926, Chen Shengshen graduated from junior high school. With his extraordinary talent in mathematics, he entered the Mathematics Department of Nankai University at the age of 15, which started his lifelong relationship with Nankai University. In his youth, Chen Shengshen studied in Germany and moved to the United States in 1937. He served as a professor at the University of Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley, an academician of the American Academy of Sciences, and a lifelong honorary academician of the New York Academy of Sciences. He won the Wolf Prize in Mathematics, which represents the highest honor in the international mathematics community, and was hailed as “the great geometer of the 20th century”. Although he was abroad, Chen Shengshen’s persistent and deep attachment to his motherland was always in his heart.

In the early 1970s, Chen Shengshen was one of the first Chinese scientists to return to China for a visit. After the reform and opening up, Mr. Chen Shengshen made it clear that he wanted to “return to his roots.” Hu Guoding, then vice president of Nankai University, specifically discussed this matter with Mr. Chen during his visit to the United States. From that time to the formal establishment of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics in the summer of 1985, great efforts were made in the past four years.

Bai Chengming, vice president of Nankai University, said: “They wrote many letters and planned many things down to the smallest detail. In the 1980s, Mr. Chen Shengshen donated four cars to the Institute of Mathematics, which was a great thing. There was a Mercedes-Benz at that time, and that was the first time I knew what a Mercedes-Benz was. The other $50,000 he received from the Wolf Prize was all donated to the Institute of Mathematics.”

On October 17, 1985, Nankai Institute of Mathematics was officially established. “Based on Nankai, facing the whole country, and looking at the world”, this is also Chen Shengshen’s positioning of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics. He then used Nankai as his base and personally hosted academic activities. With the support of the Chinese mathematics community, he trained many outstanding young mathematicians. On December 3, 2004, Chen Shengshen passed away at the age of 93. In front of the Shengshen Building of Nankai University, a blackboard-shaped tombstone and 23 low stools form the cemetery of Chen Shengshen and his wife. It always influenced Bai Jinsheng when he was a student.

In the second year, Bai Jinsheng was assigned to the factory and began to be exposed to electric welding. He never admits defeat and studies with all his strength. The scorching temperature can easily burn your arms, and the dazzling light can burn your eyes badly after working for a long time. Many young men who entered the factory at the same time couldn’t stand it. But Bai Jinsheng was different. He picked up the welding gun and learned it over and over again, and his eyes hurt so much that he opened it. Keep practicing with your eyes closed until you develop the ability to rely on your hearing and senses to perceive the effectiveness of welding, and even achieve precise welding in blind spots.

Bai Jinsheng solved hundreds of problems in practical applications through skillful operation and “blind spot welding”. In addition to opening up “blind spot welding”, Bai Jinsheng innovated the underwater welding of cast iron and carbon steel. Bai Jinsheng’s name is gradually becoming familiar to more people in the welding field.

Bai Jinsheng has also been on the front line during the construction process of the great power’s important equipment. In 2008, the national rocket encountered technical difficulties during the manufacturing process, so he immediately called Bai Jinsheng. At that time, there was only more than ten hours left for Bai Jinsheng. If this technical problem could not be solved, it would affect the launch date of the big rocket. Bai Jinsheng calmed down and carefully checked the fault point. With many years of experience and one night of trying, Bai Jinsheng innovatively used the bolt plug welding method to solve the technical problem of the large rocket.

Over the years, Bai Lao has successively invented solar welding machines, ceramic welding machines, etc., and welded parts for “Shenzhou 6”, “Shenzhou 7”, J-10, J-20, submarines, satellites, rockets and other projects, becoming our country’s One of the international welding experts who has won the most international awards in the welding field.
