According to the latest data released by the German Federal Statistics Office, the bilateral trade volume between Germany and China in 2023 was 253.1 billion euros, and China has become Germany’s most important trading partner for the eighth consecutive year. The economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is both deep and resilient.
Germany and China are carrying out constructive economic and trade cooperation in areas such as digital infrastructure and environmental protection, which is of great significance. Both countries realize that establishing and improving framework conditions for technological innovation and sustainable practices is the key to addressing global challenges such as climate change or using artificial intelligence to transform society. Being able to form consensus in these areas will not only promote economic growth, but also contribute to the development of the international community.
Looking to the future, economic and trade cooperation between the two countries still has unlimited potential, especially in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy and sustainable development. Although Germany and China have different political systems and development paths, it is inevitable that they have differences on some issues, which has caused certain interference in the development of relations between the two countries. Not long ago, I attended the “Invest in China” special promotion conference in Germany organized by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce in Stuttgart. The Chinese representative introduced to us the measures China has taken in recent years to continue to promote high standards. For example, China has optimized its visa policy to provide more convenience for smooth personnel exchanges between the two countries. China’s measures to continuously expand opening up have been implemented at many levels.
Promoting globalization, supporting multilateralism, achieving mutually beneficial cooperation, and opposing trade protectionism and unilateralism should be the clear signal Scholz wants to send during this trip. Only by continuously carrying out constructive dialogue and deepening economic and trade exchanges can Germany and China jointly help build a more connected, inclusive and prosperous world.
Germany and China have joined hands to cope with complex situations and promote common prosperity, which can be regarded as a model of international cooperation.
