Jumping in Planica lost to the wind today. The first Ski Flying World Cup competition has been postponed

The ski jumping today at the World Cup in Planica has been cancelled. The raging wind prevented the individual flying competition on Friday, and it was postponed to Saturday morning. Ski jumpers and fans waited a long time for the jury’s decision…
The first competition was supposed to take place on Friday, but these plans were thwarted by the weather. It was raining in Planica, it was blowing hard and from different directions. While the organizers and competitors would still be able to cope with the rainfall (although the quality of the show would probably suffer), the unpredictable and strong gusts posed a threat to the safety of the participants. And on the “mammoth” hill it was even bigger.
Let us remind you that FIS activists have been criticized several times this season for holding competitions in difficult conditions, which were not fair to the jumpers. There have even been cases of dangerous events, falls.
Today, first, it was decided to cancel the trial series (planned for the 14th). Then, the starting time of the competition was postponed several times (in the original program it was supposed to be 3 pm). The final decision of the jury in this case was also postponed. Traditionally, they wanted to hold the competition at all costs. The schedule of the World Cup in Planica is tight anyway, considering that it is best to play there before noon.
The problem was, of course, the raging wind on Letalnica. Another problem quickly came, because there is no artificial lighting in Planica on Letalnica, and the evening was approaching. When the next jury meetings, which were supposed to make the final decision, were postponed, it became clear that if the competition started – when the weather conditions improved – there was no need to count on more than one series.
Approx. At 16:30 the jury announced that the weather conditions had improved and the competition would start on 17. Some of the players had already left for the top, and then had to return the same way. The wind picked up again, enough that there was no point in waiting.
Finally, the competition was postponed to Saturday, at 8:45. After that, there will be a pre-planned team match. As long as the wind allows…
