Jaipur. Best wishes to all you Shiva devotees on Mahashivratri. Today, the festival of Mahashivratri is being celebrated with great pomp across the country. The doors of Lord Mahakal opened at 2:30 in the night in Ujjain. Bhasma Aarti was performed in the morning. The doors of the temple will remain open from 2.30 pm on Thursday to 10.30 pm on Saturday. Mahakal has been decorated with hemp and dry fruits. On the other hand, Omkareshwar Shivling located in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh is being seen from outside the sanctum sanctorum. There was pomp and show in Shiva temples since Thursday night. The Shivalaya echoed with the slogans of Bam Bhole. Ganga water, milk, sugar, belpatra etc. were offered to the Shivalinga of Lord Bholenath. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered prayers at Bharohia Shiva temple on the occasion of Mahashivratri.

In Jaipur, there are queues of devotees for darshan since morning in other temples including Tadkeshwar Mahadev, Jharkhand Mahadev and Rojgareshwar Mahadev. There were chants of Bam-Bam Bhole in the campus. A large number of people are reaching Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Chaura Rasta, Jaipur on Shivratri to have darshan of Lord Shiva. According to historians, the Shivalinga situated here is before the establishment of Jaipur.

Devotees believe that the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati took place on the day of Shivratri. It is said in Linga Purana that on the day of Shivaratri, Lord Shiva transformed himself into the form of Shivalinga. Hence this day is considered really auspicious by Shiva devotees and they celebrate it as Mahashivratri – the grand night of Shiva.

On Shivratri, devotees keep fast in honor of Lord Shiva. Married women pray for the well-being of their husbands and unmarried women pray for a husband like Lord Shiva, who is considered an ideal husband. However, on Shivratri, puja will continue throughout the night in Shiva temples. Abhishekam of Shivalinga will be done with milk, curd, honey, ghee and water.
