JAKARTA, BALIPOST.com – Mahfud Md’s decision to resign as Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam) from the Jokowi Cabinet is a wise thing based on good intentions. This is the assessment of the Secretary General of the DPP PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) Hasto Kristiyanto.
“The decision was taken wisely, taken with good intentions and that is what Prof Mahfud Md has done,” said Hasto during a press conference at the PDIP DPP Office, Jakarta, quoted from the Antara news agency, Thursday (1/2).
He hopes that this wise step can spread and be imitated by other officials who are contesting in the 2024 presidential election. In particular, Hasto mentioned the name of presidential candidate number 2, Prabowo Subianto, who currently still serves as Minister of Defense (Menhan).
“Hopefully Prof. Mahfud Md’s exemplary integrity can be transmitted, including to Pak Prabowo (so he resigns),” he said.
According to him, Mahfud did not use all the facilities at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs to campaign. This is an effort to build examples in carrying out campaign movements.
“It turned out that in the end he was faced with an important event when on January 24 2024, in front of the TNI ranks, Pak Jokowi stated that as a public official, as a political figure, he could take sides, he could campaign,” said Hasto.
“This is what then brought Indonesian democracy to a very critical point, which prompted the nation’s teachers to come down from the mountains, and pro-democracy groups. “Even the UGM community expressed their stance in a very sacred place, a very important place and a symbol of UGM, namely Balairung,” he said.
Mahfud Md announced his resignation from the position of Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs on Wednesday.
The resignation was related to the 2024 presidential election contest because Mahfud Md. is vice presidential candidate number 3 accompanying presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo.
In his statement, Mahfud said that his party would submit a letter of resignation directly as soon as they received a schedule to meet with President Jokowi.
It is estimated by Mahfud that the resignation letter will be submitted on Thursday (1/2).
“This letter will be delivered as soon as I have a schedule to meet with President Jokowi, but I will continue to carry it because this letter was immediately given to me as soon as I was given time,” he said. (Kmb/Balipost)
