New Delhi, April 14 (HS). The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has test-fired the Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan in the presence of the Army. During this period, the performance of the missile and warhead was found to be up to standard. The test target was a dummy tank, which the missile successfully destroyed. This test has paved the way for the Army to acquire the third generation indigenous man portable anti-tank guided missile.
DRDO said in a statement on Sunday that to promote self-reliant India and strengthen the Indian Army, the missile was fired from a man portable tripod with thermal sight on April 13 and its target was a simulated active tank. The missile hit the target in top attack mode and destroyed it completely. During this period all the objectives of the mission were achieved. DRDO said that all the objectives of this mission were accomplished during the test.
The statement said that the missile has been successfully flight tested to its maximum range. The missile is equipped with advanced avionics along with state-of-the-art miniature infrared imaging technology. This test of this portable anti-tank guided missile with ‘fire and forget’ technology has paved the way for the Army to acquire the third generation indigenous man portable anti-tank guided missile. This test has successfully verified the minimum range of the missile.
Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile
It is a man portable anti-tank guided missile named third generation anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). It has been developed by DRDO in partnership with Indian company VEM Technologies Private Limited. The ATGM is a light, long cylindrical missile with a cluster of four fins around its central core. It is fitted with a high-explosive anti-tank warhead. The length of this missile is approximately 1,300 mm. and has a diameter of approximately 120 mm with an aluminum and carbon fiber launch tube to keep the weight down.
The total weight of the missile is 14.5 kg and its Command Launch Unit (CLU) weighs 14.25 kg which combines laser all-weather with digital all-weather. Its range is about 2.5 km. Five tests have been conducted so far. The first and second trials were successfully conducted on 15 and 16 September, 2018. After this, the third and fourth successful tests were conducted in the desert of Rajasthan on March 13-14, 2019. The fifth test was conducted on September 11, 2019, in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, and the sixth test was conducted on July 21, 2021. After this, user tests have now been started.
