No smoking in the hotel, Kiai NU: No smoking means Nahdatoel Oelama smokes

KURUSETRA — Greetings Sedulur… The smoking law is still being debated among Muslims, including the ulema. However, regardless of the law, there is a funny story from a number of Nahdatul Ulama (NU) scholars who were reprimanded for smoking in a five-star hotel room during a deliberation. What’s the story?
As is known, many scholars from NU are “experts at reckoning” alias heavy smokers. Quoted from the book ‘Laughing with Gus President Dur’ by Hermawan Sulistyo, once KH Abdurrahman Wahid alias Gus Dur told about kiai who held a deliberation at a five-star hotel in Jakarta. At that time the room where the deliberation was held was filled with cigarette smoke because the majority of the kiai who came were smokers.

The clerics were still busy smoking even though on the walls of the room there was a warning “No Smoking”, which of course means No Smoking. But the kiai continued to light cigarettes in the room.
The hotel security guard came to the room and tried to give an explanation. The security guard told him that smoking was prohibited in the room and had been warned by writing on the wall.

“Oh, that,” said a cleric when the security guard reprimanded him.
“You are wrong. No Smoking stands for Nahdlatoel Oelama Smoking. So, this is the smoking area for NU people,” said the kiai casually.

The security guard could only shake his head at his wits end. He finally left the meeting room and let the cigarette smoke accompany him during the deliberation.
“The cleric who answered didn’t speak or lie. Because when it was founded in 1926, the abbreviation for NU was written using the old spelling: Nahdlatoel Oelama,” said Gus Dur.
