Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke reacted with great joy to Borussia Dortmund’s first semi-final appearance in the Champions League in eleven years.
“It is of course a proud day for all Borussia players,” said the 64-year-old after the 4:2 (2:0) in the quarter-final second leg against Atlético Madrid.
The drama of the game did not go unnoticed by Watzke. “It was a roller coaster ride,” he said: “A really great evening.” Goalscorer Niclas Füllkrug also raved: “Today it was really magical. The stadium was on fire.”
Paris Saint-Germain is now waiting as an opponent in the semi-finals. The French series champion won the second leg at FC Barcelona 4:1 (1:1) and made up for the 2:3 from the first leg. “I didn’t believe that Paris would still do that. But we accept that now,” said Watzke: “If you’re in the semi-finals, then it’s another step – a very difficult step.”
The last time we reached the semi-finals was eleven years ago BVB Then even made it to the final, but lost in the German final against FC Bayern. This scenario is still possible this time, the Munich team will face Arsenal FC in their quarter-final second leg on Wednesday.
