Special forces units were gathered at the entrance to the parliament building in Tbilisi, where opponents of the law on foreign agents gathered, RIA Novosti reports.
This happened after the protesters said they wanted to walk around the parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue with their hands raised.
Police in Tbilisi called on protesters to disperse. The security forces said that otherwise they would use force. Water cannons were deployed to the site of the action, TASS agency reported on its Telegram channel.
Earlier it was reported that during the consideration of the controversial law on foreign agents in the Georgian parliament, a fight broke out between a deputy from the opposition Citizens party, Alexander Elisashvili, and the executive secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, the leader of the parliamentary majority, Mamuka Mdinaradze.
Let us recall that in March 2023, protests began in Georgia after an attempt to pass a law on foreign agents. Then, under pressure from protesters, the republic’s parliament refused to consider the document. In April 2024, Mamuka Mdinaradze announced that the Georgian Dream would again initiate a bill on foreign agents. He clarified that this time in the bill the term “agent of foreign influence” will replace the term “organization promoting the interests of a foreign power.”
