The Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power approved the renaming of the village of Nadezhdovka in the Odessa region to Champagne. Ukrainian MP Alexey Goncharenko reported this on his Telegram channel.
To change the name of a locality, a draft resolution must be voted for in parliament at least 226 times. It is known that Nadezhdovka was called Hofnungsfeld until 1945.
RIA Novosti, citing Ukrainian media, reports that in Ukraine the city of Yuzhny in the Odessa region was renamed Port Anenthal. In November, local authorities refused to change the name, but now the Rada committee has made this decision. The new version of the name is associated with the settlement of German colonists, which was located next to the modern city.
In total, the Rada committee on Wednesday supported the renaming of five cities and 104 villages and towns, Ukrainian journalists report. For example, they want to change the name of the city of Chervonograd in the Lviv region to Sheptytsky. At the same time, it is planned to change Sinelnikovo to Ravnopolye.
In 2015, Ukraine adopted a law on so-called decommunization. As part of it, the Ukrainian authorities began to rename geographical objects and demolish monuments to Soviet and Russian figures. By the beginning of 2022, more than 2.5 thousand monuments had been dismantled, and the names of more than 900 settlements had been changed.
Earlier it was reported that Pyotr Tchaikovsky Street would be renamed in Kyiv. It is planned to be named in honor of US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland.
