They warn of risks in new station

Juarez City.- The immigration station that is planned to be put into operation at kilometer 72 of the Juárez-Chihuahua highway, where there was previously a customs inspection, is at risk due to the lack of proximity for civil protection issues, organizations denounced.

The Jesuit Refugee Service (SJR) indicated that this station, which would replace the one that was damaged on March 27, 2023, would not be subject to observance given the isolation in which it would be found.

Personnel from this international organization that also operates in Juárez said that on Fridays and in medical emergencies they used to visit the detention center of the National Migration Institute that was under the Lerdo-Stanton bridge, but the remoteness of the new center would prevent them, other organizations and even rescue units can easily access the place in case of emergencies.

They could file a complaint

For her part, Blanca Navarrete, director of Comprehensive Human Rights in Action (DHIA), specified that these new facilities that the INM has not yet finished negotiating with the Institute of Administration and Appraisals of National Assets (Indaabin) do not have the security indicated by the department in charge of Francisco Garduño Yáñez.

Therefore, the organization is considering filing a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission through which the guarantor body must review the situation of the property, Navarrete said.

What does the CNDH say?

A few weeks ago, the Commission published a special report on migratory stays in the country, with 264 pages.

He noted there that “the unfortunate events that occurred in the provisional stay of the INM in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua on March 27, 2023… marked a milestone to transform the prison model implemented by neoliberal governments in immigration stations and provisional stays,” Therefore, they pointed out the relevance of “modifying the migratory station scheme and establishing criteria for a new, comprehensive one that responds to the current migratory dynamics, emphasizes that irregular migration is not a crime and establishes, for all migration governance, the principle of non-criminalization, respect for due process and legal security, the guarantee of the rights to health, justice, dignified treatment, to request recognition of refugee status and the right to request political asylum, considering the principle of non-refoulement, the right to life and peace.” (Diego Villa)
