What happens in Mazatlán with banda music?

Right in the middle of the Easter holidays, a controversy broke out in Mazatlán, after it emerged that musical bands would supposedly be prohibited from playing on the beaches.

It all started when a condominium called Camino del Mar placed a notice stating that it is prohibited to play live music because tourists had complained about the noise.

The measure was taken up by the Association of Hotels and Tourist Companies.

Hotel owners and managers pointed out that the noise in Mazatlán is a lot, not only because of the musicians who play on the beaches, but also because of the high volume of sounds from clubs and public transportation such as pneumonia.

It was then that chaos broke out on social networks and also in the city of Sinaloa.

Various groups and soloists protested yesterday on Camarón Sabalo Avenue, receiving support from the people, although on the other side of the scale there are people who were in favor of the measure. Clashes were recorded between artists and police of various ranks.

The Sinaloan newspaper, El Debate, interviewed the mayor of Mazatlán, Edgar González Zatarain, who He clarified that the bands will be able to sing on the beaches, but as long as they are identified. In addition, schedules will be regulated so that they can do so.

He announced that so far 56 permits have been generated for band and northern groups so they can work.

He assured that they already know where and at what times they can deliver their songs to people.

The president told the newspaper that the groups that have not approached the City Council must do so to give them their permits and carry out control.

He clarified that the musicians are part of the identity of Mazatlán and that the measure is not carried out to silence their work.

After this controversy, several artists have shown their support for the bands, such as Edwin Luna and “El Coyote.”

“I was inspired here in Mazatlán. Keep trying, there is no other way to make music, music moves hearts, give it your all,” she expressed at the port.

“El Coyote” commented that musicians share their talent and thus seek bread for their children.

“Northern groups, bands, mariachis from Mazatlán…we just found out that there is now permission for them to play. A tourist, since he knows that he is going to Mazatlán, is already thinking about Sinaloa music.”
