In Russia, they will create a National Dictionary Fund – a single digital resource where data from Russian language dictionaries created over the last three centuries will be collected. The State Duma of the Russian Federation approved the corresponding bill on April 9, 2024.
Why is it needed?
The purpose of creating the National Dictionary Fund is to increase the level of general literacy, protect and preserve the state language of the Russian Federation.
“Its creation, in turn, will help improve the level of general literacy, protect, preserve, disseminate and develop the state language of the Russian Federation, and popularize the Russian language abroad,” says the explanatory note to the document.
What makes the National Dictionary Foundation unique?
It is reported that currently there are no analogues of the National Dictionary Fund in Russia.
“Lexicographic activity, focused on the production of printed editions of dictionaries, does not provide an opportunity to get an idea of the current state of the language and lags behind the cultural and linguistic needs of society. At the same time, the texts of dictionaries of the 18th – 19th centuries are difficult to access for readers. In this regard, information and communication technologies are beginning to play a key role, with the use of which the National Dictionary Fund will be created,” note the authors of the initiative.
The National Dictionary Fund will become a free, publicly accessible and verified source of information about the modern Russian literary language.
“The National Dictionary Fund consists of dictionary entries, which are the main structural units of normative dictionaries, as well as dictionaries that record information about the development of norms of the Russian literary language,” the explanatory note says.
With its help, each user will be able to check the correct spelling and pronunciation of words, find out the meaning of the same word in different contexts, and choose a synonym or phraseological unit.
Who will create the National Dictionary Foundation?
The work on creating a federal state information system was entrusted to the Russian Language Institute named after V.V. Vinogradova. The coordination of the project is entrusted to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.
When will the National Dictionary Foundation be created?
As reported in the State Duma, the large-scale project will be implemented in stages, from 2025 to 2027. The first results should appear by the end of 2025.
