Energy drinks help temporarily relieve drowsiness and feel more alert, but they can cause serious harm to the body. This was reported by Doctor of Medical Sciences, gastroenterologist Vladimir Neronov.
What are the dangers of energy drinks?
According to the doctor, caffeine and glucose or sucrose are the main components of energy drinks that deplete the body, lead to changes in the functioning of the cardiovascular system and can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
“Consumption of glucose in large quantities leads to obesity, tooth decay and metabolic disorders. And an excess amount of caffeine leads to an increase in heart rate, arrhythmia and anxiety,” Neronov said in an interview with Izvestia.
For whom are energy drinks contraindicated?
According to Vladimir Neronov, energy drinks are strictly contraindicated:
- children and teenagers;
- pregnant women;
- nursing mothers;
- elderly people and people with chronic diseases (including heart and vascular diseases, digestive system disorders and diabetes);
- Persons with mental disorders should treat such drinks with great caution.
Is it true that energy drinks are addictive?
Caffeine can be addictive, the doctor noted, so when you give up energy drinks, withdrawal symptoms may occur, i.e. the body’s reaction to refusal of energy drinks, accompanied by a deterioration in the patient’s condition. Neronov listed these side effects as:
- headache,
- irritability;
- fatigue;
- sleep disorder;
- anxiety.
“It is important to know that the sooner you start fighting addiction, the easier it will be to overcome, because in the initial stages there is much less withdrawal symptoms. In critical cases, you can go to a medical facility, where they will try to help you,” the expert emphasized.
As an alternative for energy drinks, the doctor suggested other products containing caffeine. For example, coffee or chocolate bars.
Let us remind you that Rospotrebnadzor specialists warned Russians that they should not mix energy drinks with other drinks containing caffeine, and especially with alcohol. As the department emphasized, such a mix will only “strengthen the toxic effect of alcoholic beverages on the body.” In addition, you should not drink energy drinks after physical activity, so as not to overload your heart.
