Construction of two nuclear power units has started in Ukraine — UNIAN

The construction of one block takes about five years, and its estimated cost is five billion dollars.
On Thursday, April 11, “Energoatom” started a project at the Khmelnytsky NPP to build power units Khaes-5 and Khaes-6 using the American Westinghouse AR1000 technology. According to the correspondent of UNIAN, at the ceremony of starting the project, concreting of the drainage channel was carried out to ensure the stability of the dam and to ensure the construction of the infrastructure of the power units.
“These atomic blocks make it possible to balance. This is a special feature of the American AR1000 technology. Today, the enemy attacks and destroys just the balancing power in the state. Therefore, if we had AR1000 blocks now, we could maneuver in the system, accordingly the system has an important balancing function,” said Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.
According to Petro Kotin, chairman of the board of “NAEK” of Energoatom, these power units are a completely different modern technology, which is safer. “This is a new step in the direction of more modern, safe and reliable energy. This is actually a reactor of generation III+. While other reactors of generation III. The third and fourth power units that we are now building, they will also have the features that we are now to build on the fifth and sixth power units,” Kotyn said.
Patrick Fragman, president and executive director of Westinghouse Electric Company, noted that the construction technology of these power units is very compact, which allows them to take up less space. In addition, their cost is lower compared to other power units.
“Regarding how much it will cost, this is just the next step that we are going to discuss and plan our further cooperation,” said the president of Westinghouse.
Energoatom noted that the exact construction period will depend on the course of military operations in Ukraine, however, according to calculations, in peaceful conditions, the construction period of one unit is about five years, and its estimated cost is about 5 billion dollars.
“In general, it is planned that these power units will be operated for 60 years. But we can assure you that there will be available electricity for centuries to come,” said Fragman.
New power units at Khao NPP
In 2020, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, during a visit to the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant, stated that the state should not get rid of the cheapest electricity in the country – nuclear power. Therefore, it is necessary to complete the construction of two power units of Khmelnytskyi NPP.
On December 17, 2023, NAEK “Energoatom” and Westinghouse Electric Company signed an agreement on the purchase of equipment for power unit No. 5 of the Khmelnytsky NPP.
On January 25, 2024, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Hermana Halushchenko announced that Ukraine plans to start construction of four nuclear reactors at the Khmelnytskyi NPP already this year. Then it was reported that the two blocks, which include reactors and the corresponding equipment, will be based on Russian-made equipment that Ukraine plans to import from Bulgaria. The other two will use western technologies of the Westinghouse power equipment manufacturer.
