Each company in the ZEC had a turnover of almost five million on average in 2022

These data are part of the report that the president of the Special Zone, Pablo Hernándezwill present today at the commission parliamentarian of Economy, Industry and Commerce on the results of the 2022 financial year and the provisional figures for 2023 to contextualize the recent evolution and perspectives of this organization.

Until 2022The number of jobs created in the ZEC amounted to 10,692 -1,611 more positions than the previous year (almost 18% more)-, an increase parallel to the size and stability of the companies registered in recent years, which went from 12.39 jobs per entity in 2021 to 14.12 jobs by entity in 2022.

Hernández highlights that this employment is more stable and has better salaries than those of the rest of the Canarian economy. Furthermore, that year the number of active entities whose turnover was greater than 50 million increased by 12.5% ​​compared to the previous year, a percentage similar to that of companies between 20 and 50 million.

One of the objectives of the ZEC is to continue deepening the strategy outlined and capture new niches such as artificial intelligencespatial connectivity, quantum, cybersecurity, biotechnology or the care economy.

For this, they were carried outpromotion performances in 15 countries, the majority in Spain (65%), the United Kingdom (6%), Germany and the United States.

Record

Last year the ZEC broke its record and achieved that a total of 119 companies were enrolled in the special tax regime, which represents 28% more than in 2022, until reaching the 824 companies.

In that year, the sectors that were most attracted by the tax attractiveness of the Special Zone and chose to set up shop in the Canary Islands were computer science and telecommunications, technical advice, audiovisual, wholesale trade, manufacturing and health.

Innovation and development companies in general stood out for their rapid growth, as well as the fields aerospace and astrophysics. Regarding employment, the data continues to grow and in 2023 were reached around 11,000 jobs net totals, with job creation in that year that was around 700 positions.

Regarding the origin of the new established entities – along with the traditional countries of origin such as Spain, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom – in recent years they have taken impulse entities that come from Japan or the United States. “The data shows that we are increasingly more effective and efficient in attracting investment,” says the president of the ZEC.
