Family members said that Nhon’s health is currently stable and was returned home after many days of emergency and treatment at Da Nang Hospital. Nhon returned alive after 38 hours of being “missing” at sea, bringing tears of joy to his relatives.
Young fisherman Hoang Minh Nhon told about the terrifying sea trip: On February 25 (January 16), father and son and 40 boatmates went on a squid fishing boat owned by a local ship owner and started to leave port. 4 days later the ship arrived at the fishing grounds. The work of squid fishermen starts from evening until the next morning. Each person stays on a basket, fishing all night.
At 4:00 p.m. on March 3, a total of 42 baskets were released into the sea, with each fisherman in one basket fishing for squid. At around 9:00 p.m., suddenly a large wave overturned Nhon’s basket, causing him and all his belongings to fall into the sea.
“I tried to get out, took advantage of the incoming waves and tried my best to flip the basket up, but I couldn’t. When I struggled to find half a life jacket and a life buoy to put on my body, the basket also sank completely.” Nhon recalls.

After calling for help but no one heard him, Nhon calmed down, followed the dim light in the distance and aimed to swim forward. “I saw a ship in the distance, but when I swam halfway, the ship moved away, maybe because I was wearing a locator buoy (a type of signal for cargo ships to identify floating objects and avoid collisions). . There was nothing to hold on to so I had to keep swimming. I didn’t dare sleep all night because I was afraid that if I slept, I would sink into the sea,” Nhon said.

You can endure hunger, but thirst for too long causes your throat to burn. Nhon started drinking sea water. “At first I took small sips and held it for a long time to reduce the saltiness before swallowing. Then I was so thirsty that I drank sea water and vomited again. There were times when I was so tired that I thought I wanted to give up, but then he encouraged me to keep trying, maybe God would love me and a ship would discover me and save me,” he shared.
The sky is bright, people are tired. He tried to look for any ship nearby to ask for help but in vain. The struggle in the sea continued for 38 hours.
At 11:00 a.m. on March 5, a Binh Dinh fishing boat passing by discovered the purple and black fisherman struggling in the sea so he picked him up. After being given first aid, Nhon tried to use his remaining strength to write down his name, number, and contact the train and then fainted.
The next morning, when each basket was put on the boat, Nhon and his basket lost their position. Since discovering that his son was missing, Mr. Hoang Thanh Tam, Nhon’s father, frantically searched with his shipmates. Two other ships also mobilized to urgently search for victims for many hours but were unsuccessful. For two days and nights, Mr. Tam could not sleep, waiting for news of his son.
Until receiving information from the Binh Dinh fishing boat saying that fisherman Hoang Minh Nhon had been picked up but his health was very weak, Mr. Tam burst into tears.
After 5 hours the train was running at full speed when it encountered the train that saved her child. The situation was urgent, Mr. Tam contacted the shore to request rescue, and at the same time sailed towards the shore with the ship. After running for many hours, we met the ship of the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Region II (Danang MRCC). The rescue ship’s doctors immediately brought the victim onto the ship to provide first aid.
Even when his child was brought back to shore and transferred to the emergency room of Da Nang Hospital, Mr. Tam and his wife did not dare to believe that their child would survive. After nearly a week of emergency treatment and resuscitation, young fisherman Hoang Minh Nhon was discharged from the hospital and returned home.
“God please return me back, the family’s blessing is so great, thank God! It’s unimaginable that he struggled alone for 38 hours at sea.” – Mrs. Tam hugged her child and cried.
