The Bersen building, which was completed in 1625, houses several offices. All people were evacuated, many of those present on the spot ran into the building to take out the works of art hanging on the walls.

The spiral spire on the roof, the main decoration of the building, was at the epicenter of the fire and soon collapsed.

“400 years of our cultural heritage are burning,” commented Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt.

The work of the firefighters is complicated by the copper roof, which actually keeps the heat inside, as well as the scaffolding installed around it, as restoration work was taking place there.

“We called in the equipment to remove part of the roof so that we could extinguish the flames more effectively from the outside. Because the water just runs down the roof,” explained the head of the response team, Frank Trier Mikkelsen. “This is the type of fire that we fear the most, because it is very valuable historical buildings”.

Firefighters noted that they will primarily try to prevent the further spread of the fire in both directions from the source, and if this is not possible, they will focus on protecting the windward side, where it is easier to prevent the flames from spreading, and adjacent buildings.

The building was in the process of restoration, during which they wanted to correct the shortcomings of the restoration in the 19th century and return the facade to its original appearance. During its history, the building has experienced other fires in the historical center more than once.
