They want to completely dismantle the former Arch of People’s Friendship (renamed the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People) in Kyiv.

The mere renaming of the Arch is not enough, because it refers to the symbolism of Russian imperial policy. This was announced by the expert commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINP) on determining whether objects belong to the symbols of Russian imperial policy, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“The Arch of Friendship of Peoples, located in Khreshchaty Park of the city of Kyiv, which is dedicated to the events connected with the implementation of the Russian imperial policy and its glorification (established in 1982 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR and the 65th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917), belongs to the symbolic of Russian imperial policy and is subject to complete dismantling,” the expert commission’s conclusions state.

It is noted that despite the renaming of the object to the “Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People”, the monument represents Soviet ideologues and connotations, therefore it represents a threat to the national security of Ukraine.

On May 16, 2022, the Kyiv City Council decided to decommunize the Arch of Friendship of Peoples and renamed it the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People.
