The aggressor country Russia plans to restart the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Energodar, which its troops seized at the beginning of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This increases the risk of an incident at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe even more.
This was reported by The Wall Street Journal on Friday, April 12, citing sources. As the journalists write, in the history of the nuclear industry there has never been such an incident where one country seized and operated an operating power plant of another country.
As stated in the material, the International Atomic Energy Agency received technical reports from a group of inspectors who are in the area of the station, from which it follows that the Russian Federation intends to return the ZANP to operation as early as 2024.
According to the media, European diplomats believe that the Russian Federation wants to return at least one reactor to operation.
Currently, five of the station’s six reactors are shut down (cold shutdown). The sixth heats up just enough to produce the steam needed by the station for basic safety processes.
According to the publication, there are no specialists in Russia who would know the features of the station, which is no longer a Soviet-type station – now it operates partly on Western control systems and American nuclear fuel from Westinghouse.
The WSJ writes that IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi met in Sochi last month with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and the head of Rosatom, and asked whether the station would be restarted. Putin said that it would definitely happen, but without specifying the terms.
As OBOZ.UA reported, the US State Department called on Russia to refrain from actions that could lead to a nuclear incident at the Zaporozhye NPP. For this, control over the station should be returned to the competent Ukrainian authorities.
