Partially recognized Kosovo has come close to breaking through the blockade on its membership in international organizations.
One of the key votes regarding Kosovo’s accession to the organization took place in the Council of Europe.
As “European Truth” reports, at the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, this step was supported by the absolute majority of deputies.
One by one, the PACE rejected all the amendments to the decision submitted by the Serbian parliamentarians by an absolute majority, after which the assembly passed the decision.
131 deputies voted for Kosovo’s accession to the Council of Europe, 29 voted against, and another 11 abstained. The PACE hall greeted the decision with applause.
This vote does not complete the procedure. In order for Kosovo to become a member of the organization, the final decision must be made by the Council of Ministers with a two-thirds vote. However, at the previous voting in the KMRE, the required number of votes was “for”. As reported by EuroPravda, it is expected that the Council of the Council of Europe will make a decision already in mid-May. More details – in the article “A trap for pro-Russian Serbia“.
As you know, a number of Council of Europe states, including Ukraine, do not recognize Kosovo’s independence, but PACE rapporteur Theodora Bakoyanis insists that Kosovo’s membership does not force them to recognize it. Despite these assurances, membership in the Council of Europe will be an important step for international recognition for Kosovo.
