According to Hamshahri Online and quoted by Sun, archaeologists announced that the lost ancient tombs have been discovered in a cemetery in Tuna Al-Jabal in southern Egypt. Egypt Today reports that the bodies discovered in the tombs probably belong to high-ranking officials and high priests of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt (16th to 11th centuries BC).
The stone tombs found by archaeologists each contained a number of precious antiquities. Also, an 18-meter papyrus was discovered, which is said to be the “Book of the Dead”. The Book of the Dead was discovered along with a carved and colored coffin belonging to the daughter of Jehoti or Thoth, one of the ancient Egyptian gods. A number of amulets, stones, statues and jewels were also among the things that were obtained from these tombs.
Mustafa Vaziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said: We have been looking for the discovery of this royal cemetery for seven years, and we finally found it this season. This is the first archaeological discovery related to the New Kingdom of Egypt in this area. Previously, all the finds belonged to the Old Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom.
Earlier this year, a 4,500-year-old corridor was discovered in one of the famous Great Pyramids. The secret passage is about 9 feet long and more than 2 meters wide, but where it leads to remains a mystery.
