On Sunday, April 14, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in China for a three-day visit.
This is reported by “European Truth” with reference to DW.
The German chancellor began his visit with a visit to the city of Chongqing. He will also visit Shanghai and Beijing, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
Scholz plans to reassure Xi that Germany remains committed to doing business with China.
“China remains a really important economic partner,” the chancellor told reporters before the visit, adding that he would try to level the playing field for German companies in China.
Scholz also plans to use the visit to persuade Xi to influence Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and help end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
For Scholz, this is the second visit to China after being elected to the post of chancellor. The previous one, in November 2022, took place amid strict coronavirus restrictions in China and discussions about Berlin’s dependence on Chinese goods.
Earlier this week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who wrapped up a four-day visit to China, earlier statedwhich had “difficult conversations” there about Ukraine and the support of Russia by Chinese companies.
The media reported that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in a conversation with colleagues in the EU and NATO, said that China helps Russia “on an alarming scale,” providing tools and technology.
