The Cabildo guarantees water purification until 2046 by expanding the Guía-Gáldar plant

The expansion of the Gáldar-Guía Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)in the coastal area of ​​Bocabarranco, has been a investment of 9.3 million euros and responds to “a historic demand”, as Teodoro Sosa pointed out.

The objective of the work is increase the capacity of the treatment plant, so that it goes from 3,000 cubic meters per day to 5,000in order to serve a future population of 50,000 inhabitants, taking into account forecasts until 2046.

The president of the Cabildo highlighted that the Guía-Gáldar WWTP has “a singular importance in sustainability, the guarantee of water for the primary sector and the management of the waste we produce.”

In this context, he stressed that in Gran Canarito “untreated wastewater is not discharged into the sea” and therefore rejected “the generalization that is sometimes made when talking about discharges in the Canary Islands.”

Furthermore, at no time has work in this treatment plant been paralyzed, but rather the works have been carried out at the same time as activity in the WWTP was maintained.

It is a high-level engineering work that enables go from providing service to 30,000 citizens to 50,000 –5,000 cubic meters per day–.

With this, in addition, it will be possible, as the Galdense mayor pointed out, recover, regenerate and reuse Bocabarranco beachfor decades affected by spills, which will end the underwater outfall that is associated with the island project regarding purification in the northern area.

«Now the countdown also begins to finish the emissary. But I have always said that the emissary is secondary,” said Teodoro Sosa.

“The important thing is to never use it for treated water, but rather to reuse 100%” of the water through the “storm tank that will allow 6,000 cubic liters of water to be recovered every time it rains”in such a way that the Barranco de Gáldar “never dirtyes” the Bocabarranco beach again.

The two expansion works of the Gáldar-Guía Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the installation of the Bocabarranco underwater outfall represent the largest economic investment ever made in the Northern region. In total, 18 million euros.

But, according to Sosa, it is not just about money, but about “sensitivity”, that shown by the island president Antonio Morales and the counselor Miguel Hidalgo “with the North, with Guía and with Gáldar.”

First storm tank

The Gran Canaria Island Water Council contracted the drafting of the project and, before its bidding, it was necessary for the Cabildo to acquire a plot, adjacent to the current Tertiary treatment plot, to house a 6,000 cubic meter storm tank designed to collect specific excess flow and prevent spills.

It is the first storm tank to be built in the archipelago for a treatment plant.

The Work has been executed by the UTE EDAR Guía-Gáldarcomposed of the companies Pérez Moreno SAU and Global Omnium Medioambiente SL, on the same plot occupied by the current station.
