Full membership in the United Nations would be equivalent to the recognition of Palestine as an independent state.

Any application for membership in the United Nations must first be approved by the Security Council and then approved by the General Assembly.

In the Security Council, the United States, as Israel’s main ally, has the right of veto and so far has used this authority to prevent the approval of anti-Israel resolutions.

In view of the Israeli attacks in Gaza last week, the Palestinians once again presented their request for full membership in the United Nations.

This request was discussed on Thursday in a special committee that included members of the Security Council, but no consensus was reached.

“There was no consensus,” said Vanessa Frazier, Malta’s representative to the United Nations, who holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, after the second meeting of this committee to review Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

Despite this, he said that the majority of the members of this committee agreed with the full membership of Palestine. He said: “Many countries raised the fact that Palestine meets all the criteria of the Montevideo Treaty as well as Article 4 of the Charter.”

Thursday’s meeting was held behind closed doors. Frazier, without naming any country, said two-thirds of the members supported the Palestinian request.

Advancing Palestine’s request in the special committee was only possible through consensus, but the AFP reported that any member of the Security Council can now submit a resolution to vote on this request.

The French news agency, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the vote on the resolution that Algeria will propose on behalf of the Arab countries in this regard will be voted on on April 18.

However, analysts predict that the resolution will be vetoed by the United States even if it receives the necessary nine votes out of the Security Council’s 15 votes.

Washington says that the United Nations is not the right place to decide on the formation of a Palestinian state, and that this should be achieved through an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
