Ukraine received money from a sanctioned Russian oligarch – Deripaska’s aluminum plant

UAH 32 million of a sanctioned Russian oligarch was transferred to the state budget of Ukraine. These funds were seized in 2023 at the request of prosecutors of the Prosecutor General’s Office and previously belonged to the largest producer of metallurgical alumina and aluminum hydroxide in Ukraine – Mykolaiv Alumina Plant. Accordingly, we are probably talking about the controlling oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

The Office of the Prosecutor General (OGP) reported on the transfer of funds to the budget. They reminded there:

• in 2000, the Nikolaev alumina plant (NGZ) was privatized by a holding belonging to a Russian oligarch;
• at the beginning of 2023, 32 million hryvnias belonging to the plant were seized at the request of the OGP;
• in June 2023, the decision of the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court, “which nationalized, including the mentioned assets”, entered into legal force.

“32 million hryvnias, arrested last year at the request of the prosecutors of the Prosecutor General’s Office, were transferred to the state budget. These are funds that were in the deposit account of the Customs Service and belonged to the largest producer of metallurgical alumina and aluminum hydroxide in Ukraine,” the message says.

At the same time, it is emphasized: the specified Russian oligarch is under US and EU sanctions. The reason is money laundering in the interests of the president of the aggressor state. And the companies included in his holding, which privatized NGZ, “provide the needs of Russia’s defense-industrial complex by supplying products for the production of military missile systems and other weapons.”

The OGP did not reveal the name of the oligarch. However, apparently, we are talking about Oleg Deripaska, who gained control over the Nikolaev Alumina Plant in the early 2000s. At the same time, after Deripaska, he officially withdrew from his businesses in Ukraine, although on March 1, 2022, Deripaska’s Russian aluminum giant “Rusal” openly declared that it “temporarily stopped production at the Mykolaiv alumina plant.”

As OBOZ.UA reported, earlier PINbank came under the control of Ukraine. As a result of nationalization, the state became the owner of 88.89% of the authorized capital of the bank, which was previously owned by First Investment Bank JSC, controlled by Russian oligarch Yevgeny Giner. The bank does not close at the same time.
