Ukrainian surnames – history of origin – what surnames have disappeared in Ukraine

The Ukrainian language is extremely rich in different forms of surnames. Dozens of methods of formation and suffixes inherent in surnames make them an interesting object for study. But researchers point out that not all forms of generic names have survived to our days.
In his fundamental study, linguist Yulian Redko told about surnames formed by the morphological method, which had the form of the genitive singular and even plural. What he had in mind and where such surnames could disappear, the scientist explained in his book “Modern Ukrainian Families”.
According to Redko, such forms were widespread at the end of the 16th and 17th centuries. Like most surnames, they indicated a person’s affiliation. Ivan Franko cited the whole group in his works. So it was possible to meet such names among Ukrainian peasants: Nikolay Lukina, Ivan Kryvogo, Maksym Voznoi, Fedor Chernygo, Vasyl Kryvobokogo, Khvedko Dolynskogo. As you can easily guess, people whose parents had the name or surname Lukyn, Kryvoi, Vozna, Cherny, Kryvoboky, Dolinsky, etc., were called this way. That completely fits into the general logic.
The following were formed from plural nouns: Romanchat, Hrytsevyat, Protsevyat, Maksymchat, Ivanchat. Here the logic of education is similar. These were people from families whose neighbors called Romanchat, Hrytsev, Protsev, Maksymchat, Ivanchat, that is, descendants of Roman, Hryts, Prots, Maksym, Ivan. So such a group of surnames indicated the third generation of the family – the grandchildren.
Originally, such words were possessive adjectives. But when they took shape as surnames, they acquired all the properties and characteristics of a noun.
Where did such surnames go if they were so popular several centuries ago? He rarely explains their disappearance by the fact that they were reduced to a form that is easier to understand, consistent with the name of a person in case and gender. There was Maksym Voznoi, and he became Maksym Vozny. There was Fedko Dolynskyi, and he became Fedor Dolinskyi. There was Anna Kryvobokogo, and she became Anna Kryvobokaya.
