CANADA, BALIPOST.com – To end the suffering of the Gaza population, the UN special advisor emphasized the prevention of genocide Alice Wairimu Nderitu on Thursday.

“This war, and the suffering that accompanies it, must end, and it must end now. “Those responsible for obstructing humanitarian access and hate speech, inhumane and inflammatory language, must be held accountable,” Nderitu said in a statement, as quoted by Antara news agency, Friday (29/3).

Nderitu repeated UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for the UN Security Council resolution on a ceasefire to be fully implemented.

“Respect for international law should not be an abstract idea. “This must produce real results, and the most important thing is to protect people’s lives, in times of peace and war,” he said.

Recalling the obligations under the Genocide Convention as highlighted by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Nderitu also said that “shared pain needs to be acknowledged, and that desire can become a reality when there is a will, not just to listen to the other side. but also to recognize mutual respect for fundamental rights.”

Israel has launched deadly military attacks on Gaza since a cross-border attack on October 7 by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, which killed 1,139 Israelis.

More than 32,500 Palestinians have been killed and more than 74,900 people injured due to mass destruction and shortages of basic necessities.

The Israeli army also imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip, leaving much of the population, especially in the northern region, on the verge of starvation.

Israel’s war has displaced 85 percent of Gaza’s population amid shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60 percent of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel was accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in an interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take action to ensure that humanitarian aid is provided to civilians in Gaza.

In a ruling Thursday indicating additional steps, the top court ordered Israel to ensure “unimpeded provision of emergency aid” to Gaza. The ICJ said that Palestinians in Gaza no longer only face the risk of starvation (but) famine is starting to occur. (Kmb/Balipost)
