US support is critically important for Ukraine in the war against Russia. However, the bill, which would allow the supply of American weapons, failed during the vote in the Senate against the background of growing opposition from Republicans, writes The New York Times.

According to Michael Kofman, an expert on Russia at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, Ukraine could effectively hold out for part of this year without more American military aid. But over time, there will be no prospect of rebuilding the army, and the country will begin to slowly lose.

The lack of further American aid, according to him, “will indicate a harsh, negative trajectory of the development of events in the second half of this year.”

“Analysts say that the Ukrainian army will not be suddenly defeated, but the degradation of its forces will be inevitable. European countries do not have stocks of American-level weapons and ammunition and are unlikely to be able to fill this gap,” the article says.

It is noted that since the first days of a full-scale invasion, Ukraine has not yet experienced such an uncertain moment in the war. Russia was supported by weapons from Iran and North Korea.

In the fiercest battles in the East, for the city of Avdeivka, the ratio of the fire of Russian and Ukrainian artillery is already five to one, say Ukrainian commanders.

According to journalists, now Ukraine is again looking for ways of adaptation and improvisation, expanding the domestic production of weapons and relying more on drones, but American assistance remains extremely necessary. Russia’s advantage in firepower and personnel forces Ukraine to lag behind on most of the front line.

“To a certain extent, Ukraine itself is to blame for its problems. Corruption, which has long been a problem in the country, sucks millions from the supply system and other spheres,” the publication writes.

Western support for Kiev has not kept up with Moscow’s military stockpiling, as Russia has increased the production of drones, eliminated shortcomings in its military industry, and bolstered itself with supplies from Iran and North Korea.

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, reacted sharply to the failure of the US Senate’s vote on the aid bill for Ukraine. He said that the Republican Party of the USA is betraying democratic freedoms by failing this vote.
