War: Russia may be preparing an information field for an invasion of Moldova – ISW
[ad_1]
Russia is trying to use pro-Russian figures in Moldova to destabilize democracy and society in this country.
Moscow wants Moldova not to join the European Union, writes the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The pro-Russian head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia Evgeniya Hutsul is trying to spread the opinion that the Moldovan government is controlled by Romanian officials.
During an interview with the Russian Channel One, she stated that if Gagauzia starts the process of secession from Moldova, there will be a reaction not only from the Moldovan government in Chisinau, but also from Bucharest. Hutsul said that the authorities of Moldova can respond to the secession of Gagauzia with “loud, threatening statements” or send troops to the region.
She said that the unification of Moldova with Romania would be the “death” of Moldova, the Moldavian language and culture. And Gagauzia will begin the process of leaving Moldova, if this happens.

Analysts believe that Hutsul’s interview on Russian state television may be aimed at creating conditions for justifying potential future Russian aggression against Moldova in front of a Russian-speaking and pro-Russian audience.
The Kremlin may consider its efforts in Moldova as part of a broader existential geopolitical conflict with the West. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia previously hinted that Western countries are leading the national security policy of the Armenian government. They also stated that Finland “lost its independence in making foreign policy decisions” after joining NATO.
President of Moldova Maya Sandu declared that the Russian Federation wants to carry out a coup d’état in the country.
Russia plans to seize the airport in Chisinau and transfer military personnel there, the Prime Minister of Moldova said Doreen Rechan.
Russia is creating tension around Moldova, pursuing two goals. The first is an attempt to distract the European public from the events taking place in Ukraine, the second is to demonstrate at least some kind of “victory” for the Russian people, said the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
