Zucchini is an unpretentious vegetable and does not require any special care. Nevertheless, there are some nuances in their cultivation. First of all, it is necessary to plant on time. When to sow zucchini in open ground, where to do it and how – we tell in the material.
Where is the best place to plant zucchini?
Zucchini are best planted in beds after:
- carrots;
- cabbage;
- potatoes;
- beets;
- greens and onions, garlic;
- corn
They should not be planted in the same place as last year or the year before last.
Is it possible to plant pumpkin and zucchini next to each other? It is better not to plant, as well as next to other pumpkins. The first reason is that they have common diseases and pests, that is, someone got sick and infected the other. The second reason is overpollination. This is when zucchini can cross-pollinate, for example, with pumpkin or squash. As a result, a strange vegetable with an incomprehensible taste can grow.
Choose a warm sunny place under the zucchini bed. They prefer chernozem or light loam with neutral or moderately alkaline soil.
Zucchini do not like acidic soil and chlorine-containing fertilizers.
When can you plant zucchini
Zucchini are mainly planted with seeds, sometimes – through seedlings, but extremely rarely. The time of sowing zucchini depends on the climate and weather conditions. It is important not to plant them before the deadline, otherwise they may not take off. But you don’t want to be late with sowing, otherwise the neighbor’s zucchini will grow earlier.
It is best to orient yourself to the air temperature when sowing zucchini in the garden.
It is necessary to sow zucchini in open ground when the threat of repeated frosts has passed, the soil has warmed up to 13-14°C, and the temperature at night will not drop below 8°C.
Experienced gardeners advise covering the future zucchini bed with agrofiber (or black film) about a week before sowing – this way the ground will heat up. The seeds should also be covered with a film and left until sprouts appear.
How to plant zucchini seeds in open ground
Before sowing, the bed will need to be loosened – to a depth of about 10 cm.
Zucchini seeds must be soaked in settled water (without chlorine) for several hours before sowing, and then germinated in a wet napkin.
When sowing, seeds are planted in holes at a depth of 3-4 cm, every 50-70 cm so that they are not crowded. You can put not one, but 2-3 seeds in the hole – so that they are guaranteed to rise. Unnecessary ones can then be thinned out, and the strongest seedling left.
Care for zucchini after sowing
It is necessary to water zucchini only when the top layer of the soil dries out – approximately once every 10 days. Make sure that there is no excess moisture, otherwise the zucchini will start to rot.
It is better to collect water for irrigation in advance so that it settles and warms up to approximately 22°С. You can hold it in the sun beforehand.
Do not forget to attract pollinating insects to the garden. To do this, you can resort to one trick: during the flowering of zucchini, put containers with a solution of honey between the beds – 1 tsp. on a glass of water. Or do it even easier: plant marigolds between the beds – they will attract bees and other pollinators and additionally protect the zucchini from pests.
