In Russia, prices for red caviar have begun to decline; since October they have fallen by about four percent, RBC writes, citing a study by the Chek Index resource, the operator of fiscal data OFD Platform.
According to analysts’ findings, from October 1 to November 12, the average retail price of red caviar in Russia generally fell by 4% by 2022 – to 6 thousand rubles per kilogram.
With reference to Rosstat data, it is noted that salmon caviar in retail stores began to rise in price from August 2022 to August of this year. However, after this, caviar began to become cheaper. By October, retail prices for the product had almost reached the level of last year (5.66 thousand rubles per kilogram), but they were still 7% higher (6.06 thousand rubles per kilogram).
At the same time, according to Check Index, prices for red caviar in Moscow continue to rise. In particular, in October-November 2023, the average price of the delicacy was 5% higher than in 2022 (7.1 thousand rubles per kilogram).
At the same time, the demand for salmon caviar is growing; in October-November 2023, on average in Russia it is 21% higher than last year. In Moscow, the number of purchases of the delicacy this fall has increased by 15% compared to last year.
However, experts consider it quite likely that caviar prices may rise again by the New Year.
Earlier it was reported that the authorities plan to mark jars of red caviar with a special sign from May 1 next year. However, it will be possible to legally buy unmarked caviar for another 11 months – until April 1, 2025. Stores will then be required to scan tags at the point of sale.
Let us recall that the Chairman of the Council of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Development of the Consumer Market, President-General Director of the Moscow International Business Association Alexander Borisov said that thanks to the large catch of pink salmon this year, prices for this fish will decrease by about 10%.
