The old Hotel Oriental, between Real and Hermanos Zerolo streets, will definitely be an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the monument category, in a few weeks, unless there is a judicial resolution that considers otherwise. The declaration was published days ago in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, endorsing a recent agreement in the Government Council.
In the latest official document, promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture; Fundamentals transferred by the Cabildo are taken into account. And consequently, the allegations of the City Council and the promoter entity Inmobiliaria Chimida are set aside. The opposing parties have the option of resorting to litigation to oppose the agreement.
The property stands out for the architectural and historical values of the building, validated by the Cultural Heritage Council of the Canary Islands. “It is one of the best exponents of urban bourgeois architecture in Arrecife and also a building with high historical value,” as assessed by the Government Council. The establishment was founded by Claudio Toledo Cabrera at the beginning of the last century, operating as the first and only high-end hotel that existed on the island.
The BIC declaration limits the actions that may be undertaken to rehabilitate the building, which is in a relatively poor state of conservation.. In the last term there was conflict between the Cabildo and the Consistory.
