Truce with Russia – Macron wants to stop the war during the Olympics – UNIAN

This is a beautiful statement by analogy with the traditions of Ancient Greece, where military operations stopped during the Olympics, the diplomat noted.
Ukrainian diplomat, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to France (2014-2020) Oleg Shamshur assessed whether there are any chances of implementing French President Macron’s call for a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Summer Olympics.
In his opinion, “this is a beautiful statement, which is a continuation of traditions, and even more an allusion to the tradition that was still in Ancient Greece”, when during the Olympics, any military actions really stopped. “I think it’s unrealistic,” Shamshur said on the air of the telethon.
He believes that the improbability of this call is evidenced by three facts. “First of all, I don’t think that Russia will agree to this. Because they believe that they have a strategic initiative and therefore need to continue, move forward,” Shamshur emphasized.
The second is that Russia can use this invitation to cease fire to say “we are not against it, let’s stop it, but the hawks in Kyiv don’t want it, all the claims are against them.” “And it will spread not so much in the West, because no one there will believe it. And if it is spread in the countries of the Global South, they will be able to accept it there,” Shamshur explained.
Thirdly and most importantly, he does not believe that Ukraine needs a ceasefire now. “Since we understand that this can also be used by Russia for respite, regrouping and new strong strikes on Ukraine. That is, I do not see the sense, the more practical possibility for implementation or the expediency for us in implementing this call. Even if it supports China. And they can support it. Based on the fact that they are trying to play respectability, and understanding that this is ultimately in the interests of Russia,” summed up the ex-ambassador of Ukraine in France.
Armistice during the Olympics: what is known
As UNIAN reported, French President Emmanuel Macron hopes to agree on an “Olympic truce” during the upcoming Summer Olympics, which will include a ceasefire in Ukraine, Sudan and the Middle East.
The Kremlin has already stated that there are “nuances” that will complicate the process of considering such initiatives. Putin’s representative added that there have been no official steps towards a truce yet.
