Documentary “20 days in Mariupol” director Mstislav Chernovawhich brought Ukraine an Oscar, will appear on the Netflix streaming platform from April 21.
A message about this appeared in the official account Netflix Ukraine in Instagram.
“A group of Ukrainian journalists documents the terrible realities of war, finding themselves in the coastal city of Mariupol after the invasion of Russian troops in early 2022”— says the description of Chernov’s film on the streaming site.
The tape “20 days in Mariupol” was created by director Mstislav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Maloletka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko. They became the last journalists to remain in Russian-besieged Mariupol at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
So they managed to record the beginning of the destruction of the Ukrainian city by the occupiers: the death of children and adults, the creation of mass graves, the destruction of a maternity hospital by a Russian aerial bomb, and other Russian war crimes.
Later, based on the materials that Chernov and a team of Associated Press photojournalists sent from Mariupol to the world media, telling about the terrible events in the city, a documentary tape was edited. For this, they later received the Pulitzer Prize and the Shevchenko Prize.
In February 2024, the film won the BAFTA film award. And in March, the film won the “Oscar” award in the “Best feature-length documentary” category.
Pdue to the historic victory of “20 days in Mariupol” at the Oscars, the documentary was returned to cinemas.
The documentary tells the story of the first weeks of fighting in Mariupol, Donetsk region, during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The film was also released on Ukrainian streaming platforms: Takflix, Sweet.TV, Megogo, “Kyivstar TV” and Volia TV.
